The primary figures in the founding of Luverne were M.P. Legrand, S.D. Hubbard, and George A. Folmar who purchased land surrounding the railroad, which would become the site of the new town.

Luverne grew very quickly due to its advantageous location relative to other more established communities in the county. By 1890, it boasted nineteen businesses and a population of approximately 1,000 people. In 1893 a vote by the people moved the county seat from Rutledge to Luverne where a new courthouse was constructed. The booming young town which just four years earlier was a pine forest had become the center of business, government and social events for Crenshaw County.

Historic homes

Historic downtown

46 miles south of Montgomery

Parks – E L Turner Park, Veterans Park, Douglass Park

Antiques and flea market shopping

Excellent restaurants

On Beach Highway to Panama City, Florida

Bed & Breakfast (Members Alabama Bed & Breakfast Innkeepers)

Residence Inn (34 room hotel)

Luverne Public School – Kindergarten through 12th grades

Crenshaw Christian Academy – Kindergarten through 12th grades

Community College – LBW Community College

Volunteer Fire Department

Public Library

UtilitiesCity of Luverne
(one bill for electricity, water, sewer, trash)
22 East Fifth St.
Luverne, AL 36049
334-335-5741Luverne Police Department
64 W 6th St.
Luverne, AL 36049
334-335-3334Luverne Fire Department
217 S.
